One of the major milestones in a child’s early development is the eruption of their first tooth, often referred to as ‘teething’. Although this can vary greatly from child to child, typically this process starts around six months of age.
Milk teeth, also known as primary or baby teeth, begin their formation while your baby is still in the womb. By birth, all 20 of these teeth are tucked away inside the jaws, waiting to surface.
Most babies will see their first tooth, usually the lower central incisors, appear between 4 to 7 months, and by around three years, most children will have their full set of 20 primary teeth.
Baby teeth are essential for chewing, speaking, and reserving space for permanent teeth, making early dental hygiene crucial. Start with a soft cloth to clean gums and, upon the first tooth’s arrival, initiate gentle brushing with a small toothbrush and a bit of fluoride toothpaste.
Even if your child’s teeth come in early or late, remember that every child has their unique timeline. Always consult with a pediatric dentist if you have concerns about your child’s oral health. The arrival of the first tooth is an exciting time and a sign that your baby is growing up!
